On Sunday, April 16, 2023, the G7 announced the implementation of measures to fight against global warming and plastic pollution.

According to the latest IPCC report published on March 20, at the current rate, global warming could exceed 1.5°C by 2035. The IPCC calls for an immediate reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change is the cause of many weather phenomena such as fires, floods, heat waves, rising oceans. These meteorological phenomena have disastrous consequences on the fauna and the flora but also on the man. Indeed, these natural disasters destroy habitats, crops and sometimes cost us our lives.

What is the G7?

As a reminder, the Group of Seven, or G7, is a think tank and economic partnership that brings together each year the seven most industrialized countries in the world: France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy and Canada. The G7 meets to discuss current issues such as peace and security, the fight against terrorism, development, education, health, environment and climate change. At the last meeting, the G7 members decided to take action against global warming and plastic pollution based on the latest IPCC report.

Measures put in place

• Accelerate the exit from fossil fuels. The G7 wants to replace fossil fuels with renewable energies. Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas are one of the main causes of global warming. When fossil fuels are burned, they release CO2 and other greenhouse gases that trap heat in our atmosphere, making them the main contributors to global warming and climate change.
• Reduce plastic pollution to zero. Plastic is a major contributor to climate change through greenhouse gas emissions during its manufacture and threatens marine biodiversity. Plastic is a real environmental disaster, each year the production of plastic represents 85% of marine waste according to the UN. This material is also harmful to humans, as microplastics contaminate air, food and water.
• Provide financial assistance to developing countries. The G7 countries want to help disadvantaged countries to fight against global warming. Disadvantaged countries do not have the resources to develop infrastructure to combat global warming.
