A few days ago, on March 20, 2023, the IPCC released its new report! Et il semblerait “ There is a very short window of opportunity to act. ”

What is the IPCC?

As a reminder: the IPCC is a group of UN climate experts and is divided into 3 groups working on various aspects of climate change. Thus the report corresponds to the combination of the 3 sub-reports.

Here are the things to remember about this report:

• The report points out that climate change is caused primarily by human activities, particularly greenhouse gas emissions. The temperature has increased by 1.09% in a decade.

• If we continue the current pattern, the warming would be + 1.5 C° around 2030 – 2035. While the countries of the world had set the objective of limiting the increase to 1.5 C° in 2100.

• The consequences of global warming are more severe than predicted in the previous 2014 report. Current impacts of climate change include more frequent and intense heat waves, extreme precipitation, sea level rise, loss of biodiversity, and an increase in the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events such as storms and hurricanes, but also fires and excess mortality.

• The measures taken to achieve the objectives are far from sufficient. These emissions must be drastically reduced to avoid even more severe impacts.It would be necessary to reduce by 2 our CO2 emissions by 2030 to avoid reaching the 1.5 C°.

The report states that even if greenhouse gas emissions were reduced immediately and significantly, the impacts of climate change would continue to be felt for decades, even centuries.

However, the report also highlights that ambitious actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions could limit the most severe impacts of climate change and enable effective adaptation to unavoidable impacts.

In sum, the sixth IPCC report is an urgent call to action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit the impacts of climate change.

But there is still hope! We can each act at our own level, by changing our consumption patterns.
