2022 would be one of the best years for energy efficiency.
The International Energy Agency uses a central indicator called energy intensity to measure energy efficiency. This assigns to a selected area, the amount of energy consumed in relation to the GDP.
In 2022, the international energy agency estimates that energy intensity would be reduced by 2%, which has not happened since 2011. The years following the health crisis, 2020 and 2021, were the worst on record, as their energy intensities were reduced by about 0.5%.
The investments that have enabled this improvement are estimated at $560 billion worldwide in 2022, 16% more than the previous year.
Energy efficiency and sobriety have once again become global priorities for the world, due to the current energy crisis. This crisis is explained by the war in Ukraine operated by Russia, energy prices have undergone a rise of nearly 40% between October 2021 and October 2022.
Thus, energy consumption behaviors are changing because of the scarcity of energy, but also because of the increase in prices. By consuming less, individuals see themselves in the obligation to make savings in order not to see their bills increase too much.
